Sometimes, I can not connect to Your-Net, or my connection speed is below the maximum speed of my modem, or my connection often drops after a short amount of time online.

There are many things that can hinder the performance of your connection. The main factors (assuming that there is no hardware failure) are need for a modem initialization string, and static line noise.

  • You may have a problem with noise on the phone line. This can cause random disconnects or trouble logging in. . If you believe that this may be the problem, you can contact the Telephone Company and ask them to check the line noise on your phone line. You should request that they test the lines for a data grade connection.
  • One last thing that might improve your connection is to switch your access phone number.

I get the message "cannot establish a compatible set of network protocols."

There are several things that cause this problem. Make sure that all of the following are correct.

  • Double click the My Computer icon, then double click the dial up networking folder, and right click on the your-net icon. Select properties from the menu that appears. On the next screen (titled "General") click on the configure button. Click on the options tab that appears at the top of the next window. The first two options are bring up terminal window before dialing, and bring up terminal window after dialing. Neither box should be checked.
  • From the Windows 95/98 desktop, choose start, then settings, then control panels. Double click the network control panel. Under the configuration tab, you should have at least TCP/IP, and Dial up adapter installed. Click on TCP/IP, and choose properties. Under the IP address tab, make sure that you have selected server assigned IP address. Under the gateway tab, make sure that the installed gateway field is blank.
